About Pawscause

My name is Karen Mountain. I am an educator by nature, a marketer by desire, and a grant writer by accident. I love animals and have passed on my passion to my 2 children, one who is studying to be a veterinarian. Together we foster dogs for a local rescue as they wait for their forever homes.

I have a Master’s in Retailing and Consumer Sciences. and  a Master’s certification in Social Media Marketing through Harvard Extension School.

So what do I do with all of this knowledge? I teach Marketing classes and I work on various training contracts around town. I have built training classes on everything from how to use Excel properly to how to safely operate a chainsaw.

Yes, I said chainsaw. It was the chainsaw class that made me think… “What am I doing here?” I have so much more to offer.

So with my training skills and need to give back to the community, I began to look at where I could help out the most. What I found was I have a unique of looking a financial information for Animal Rescue groups. By partnering up this talent with my Marketing ability, grant writing opportunities came my way.

Being a curious person by nature and my entrepreneurial spirit led me to analyze how we train small rescues to find funding.  Let’s face it. They are run by volunteers who love animals, not numbers. Their goals are reducing the amount of euthanasians and increasing adoptions, not figuring out how a 990 can give them information for a grant project.

With that in mind, this blog was a new training adventure for me. I will write about things like “how to look at direct and indirect costs” and “how to segment your financials for a better grant application”.

So what is my goal? To educate rescues to find different funding avenues other than sales and donations.

I will post it all here. So pause and take a look at how you fund your cause. Maybe there is a way you reenergize your funding efforts.
